Drinking Coffee After Gastric Sleeve By Jet Medical Tourism on July 03, 2018

Drinking coffee after gastric sleeve surgery should avoided during the first several months to help the stomach heal properly. People around the world look forward to a morning cup of coffee to get their day started off right, and most couldn’t imagine having to face a day of work without that first cup of java to kick it all off.

But if you’ve undergone bariatric surgery, then it might be wise to find an alternative to your morning coffee, because caffeine, in general, is not advisable after bariatric procedures like a gastric sleeve.

For patients who have had a gastric sleeve or are considering it, here's what you need to know about drinking coffee after gastric sleeve surgery.

It’s Safest to Avoid Caffeinated Beverages Like Drinking Coffee After Gastric Sleeve

Moderate coffee consumption does have some health benefits: it has been linked with increased longevity and a lowered risk of many illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, certain cancers, and type 2 diabetes.

  • So with coffee being a generally healthy beverage in moderation, you might wonder why medical professionals recommended you stay away from it after gastric sleeve surgery.
  • The truth is, all caffeinated beverages—including tea, colas, and energy drinks—should be avoided after gastric sleeve.
  • For all the health benefits coffee has to confer, it also has some adverse effects on the body, and these are the reasons you have to worry about after gastric sleeve.

The Medical Complications of Caffeine After Bariatric Surgery

There are many reasons that you should avoid coffee after gastric sleeve surgery, and one of the most important is that caffeine can contribute to poor nutrient absorption, which is already a possible issue among bariatric patients (though it should be noted this isn't as much of a problem after the gastric sleeve procedure).

  • Another problem is that coffee can cause indigestion because it stimulates acid secretion by activating specific cells in the stomach and encouraging them to release the hormones that lead to acid production.
  • It's especially important to avoid caffeine in the first few months following gastric sleeve surgery when your stomach is still healing, and your body is getting used to new foods and a new lifestyle.

Alternatives to Your Morning Coffee

Ultimately, the best liquid you should drink throughout the day is water, because this will ensure you stay hydrated and healthy without adding extra fluids to your stomach.

You can even spruce it up by infusing it with lemon, lime, cucumber, or fresh herbs like basil, but remember to avoid carbonated beverages, including sparkling water.

However, we realize it’s not always possible to drink nothing but water, and that sometimes you'll want something else, so here are some alternatives to coffee that you can experiment with:

  • Herbal tea (that doesn’t contain caffeine)
  • Warm apple cider
  • Decaffeinated coffee (in moderation, and only after a couple of months of healing time)
  • Energizing smoothies

Although you don't have to give up coffee altogether after gastric sleeve (in the form of decaf), it’s best for bariatric patients to abstain from all caffeinated beverages, especially in the first few months following surgery, and after that as well as much as possible.

Even though coffee does have some health benefits, the problems it can cause in bariatric patients means you should steer clear after your procedure, and opt for alternative beverages, and mainly water, instead.
